The IIA Releases Briefing on Compliance With the OECD's Anti-Bribery Recommendations
On Dec. 9, 2009, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published the Recommendation of the Council for Further Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions (Anti-Bribery Recommendation), a set of guidelines to strengthen the OECD framework for fighting foreign bribery among the 38 state parties to the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention. Since the release of the Anti-Bribery Recommendation, many chief audit executives (CAEs) have been trying to determine its impact on existing anti-corruption efforts. In the United States, for instance, organizations and individuals performing business transactions abroad are subject to the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other international anti-corruption regulations. As Dominique Vincenti, CAE for Seattle-based fashion retailer Nordstrom explains, many CAEs are looking for more definitive guidance on ways to augment FCPA compliance measures to meet the requirements set forth in the OECD’s Anti-Bribery Recommendation. Ensuring Compliance With the Anti-Bribery Recommendation (PDF, 730 KB) gives an overview of compliance strategies that can help CAEs determine the effectiveness of their organization's anti-corruption program.
